Have you ever had that moment where you knew you needed to say something… even though it might feel a little weird? Thatās exactly what happened during a recent visit with my two adult sons.
This episode is personal. Itās about love, fatherhood, and one of the most important lessons Iāve learnedāand now passed down: šš½ The importance of investing in yourself.
šØāš¦ Visiting My Boys… Who Arenāt Boys Anymore I went to visit my sons recently. These young men live together, work hard, and show up every day for their jobs. Iām proud beyond words. Theyāve grown into responsible men who handle their business.
But while I was there, I noticed something.
Whenever they were home, they were glued to their video games. Now donāt get me wrongāIām not judging. Everybody needs downtime. But I couldnāt help but notice how much time was being spent that way.
And it caught me off guardābecause they didnāt grow up watching me do that.
When they were young, I was always grinding.
Working my full-time job (which often meant traveling),
Running my side hustle (real estate at the time),
Studying and learning,
Or spending time with the family.
My free time wasnāt really āfree.ā It was focused. Purposeful. An investment.
š§ The Talk: Spend vs. Invest (In Yourself) I sat on it for a minute. I told myself, āTheyāre grown men now. Itās not really my place.ā
But then something inside nudged me: āIf you donāt say it with love now, you might regret it later.ā
So I shared what was on my heart.
āYou can either spend your time and money… or you can invest them. But when you invest them into yourselfāyour growth, your skills, your health, your futureāthatās when life begins to expand.ā
Spending feels good in the momentāwhether itās hours on a screen or money on something shiny. But investing gives you something back.
šø Spending = Consuming. š Investing = Becoming.
š You Are the Asset I reminded them:
āYou are your most valuable asset. Not your job. Not your bank account. Not your degrees. YOU.ā
So every time you:
Waste a day without building anything…
Drop $100 on a new game but say no to a course…
Watch 6 hours of TV but skip reading a chapter of something that could change your mindset…
…you're spending instead of investing. Youāre delaying your own growth.
But when you flip the switch?
When you say, āYou know what? Iām worth the investmentā¦ā Thatās when everything changes.
š” 3 Ways to Start Investing in Yourself Today
- ā° Invest Your Time Spend an hour each day learning something new, building your dream, or improving your skills. Time is limitedābut how you use it decides everything.
- š° Invest Your Money Buy the book. Join the course. Hire the coach. Too many people will spend hundreds on entertainment, but hesitate to spend $50 to learn something that could change their future.
Ask yourself: Is this helping me growāor just helping me escape?
- š§ Invest in Your Mindset Listen to personal development podcasts. Read books that challenge you. Surround yourself with people who want more.
Your thoughts shape your actions. Your actions shape your life.
ā¤ļø Real Talk: Being a Dad to Men It felt weird for a momentāstepping back into that ādadā role after so many years. My sons are grown now. Weāre best buds. But I knew this was something I had to say.
And they listenedālike the good young men theyāve always been.
They said theyād start being more intentional with their time. That theyād start investing in themselves moreāone step at a time.
And that? That made my heart full.
ā Your Turn: Ask Yourself This Today, I invite you to pause and reflect.
